From an extreme discipline to destruction

As I already said in my blog, the Korean people at work are extremely disciplined and hierarchy is essential. But not everything in their lives is hard work and submission.

Afterworks, just like kimchi, take a very important part in Korean people’s lives.

Once per week after they’ve finished their work, the entire department or several teams go straight to the bars and restaurants, normally at 6 pm (this is exceptionally a reason to leave the office “early”). This ritual begins with a meal  and then they drink a lot. Basically, they use small glasses to drink beer mixed with local alcohol, called “soju”, a kind of sake. And for one hour they drink one shot after the other under the orders of their boss while laughing and cheering in a joyful spirit, and at the end they are absolutely drunk. During this afterwork time, hierarchy disappears and stress too. This is their only way to relax completely and forget work.

It’s a bit weir that the boss said to his employees “Get drunk now !”
